Disney - You've Done it Again!

I have always been a fan of the Wizard of Oz! I even got to play the Cowardly Lion on Stage!  So, I was excited and also a little leary of seeing the new OZ The Great and Powerful!  Excited, because after all, it is about theWizard of Oz.  Leary, because I didn't want them to mess with a classic.

Well, Disney hit it out of the park as far as I'm concerned!  The movie is actually a prequel to the Wizard of Oz.

From Disney:

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved wizard character. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great wizard but into a better man as well.

I knew I was in for a treat when the opening credits drew me in!  I loved them!  I loved how the Kansas scene was filmed in black and white just like the beginning of Wizard of Oz.  The Land of Oz itself was truly magical!  I'm excited to own the BluRay when it comes out so I can slowly scan some of the scenes and really check out all the amazing visual effects!

I enjoyed all the subtle (and not so subtle) references to the movie Wizard of Oz!  I thought the final battle scene was spectacular!  It kept me thoroughly entertained.  You know it's a good movie when you discuss it all the way home.  I thought James Franco, who plays Oz, did a great job of portraying the transformation that Oz goes through to become the wizard... and oh, those twinkling eyes!  Sigh....

I definitely recommend this movie!  It's funny, visually stunning, exciting, and some of those dresses that the witches wear are to die for!  Go see it, you won't be sorry.  It opens nationwide in theaters today, March 8th!

Disclosure:  I was given the opportunity to preview this movie.  The opinions are all my own and free of charge!
